Why is Denali (6,194 m) so big? Caught inside the tectonic wake of a migrating restraining bend

چکیده
Abstract Topography along strike‐slip fault restraining bends is theoretically self‐limited by erosion, block translation and the expected abandonment of bends. However, Denali (6,194 m) Foraker (5,304 are located within a bend dextral Fault system. We reveal role evolution in mountain building with physical experiments scaled to simulate Alaska Mount McKinley (MMRB). Despite natural complexity MMRB, first‐order patterns (of separation rates, uplift lateral migration) from geologic data align experiments. Thermochronology, seismicity, slip rate show that persistence single strand through ~6 Ma MMRB facilitated simultaneous advection crust migration eastern vertex bend.

O10: Why Preschool Education Programs Is So Important
Neurological development is largely a result of the learning that takes place starting at birth and during the earliest years of life. Child Care and Preschool Education Programs are key to predicting ultimate success in school and life. Children who attend preschool or other early education programs have enhanced cognitive, verbal, and social development (which is maintained into the first few...

متن کاملWhy is geoengineering so tempting?
Geoengineering can be de ned as the technologies that aim to deliberately alter geophysical mechanisms in order to alleviate the impacts of climate change. It has received increasing attention by economists and the public but remains deeply controversial. This paper studies the potential bene ts from geoengineering in a standard one-sector growth model augmented with a carbon cycle and a climat...
متن کاملWhy is snow so bright ?
Snow seen against an overcast sky typically appears much brighter than the clouds that provide the illumination. This raises the problem of how a reflecting surface may appear brighter than its diffuse illuminant. We show that three factors are largely responsible for this visually striking effect: the law of darkening for the cloud cover, the reflectivity of the snow and the average landscape ...
متن کاملWhy Is Consumption So Smooth?
For thirty years, it has been accepted that consumption is smooth because permanent income is smoother than measured income. This paper considers the evidence for the contrary position, that permanent income is in fact less smooth than measured income, so that the smoothness of consumption cannot be straightforwardly explained by permanent income theory. Quarterly first differences of labor inc...
